Statistical Science Program

The Statistical Science Program in the Mathematical Sciences Institute is coordinated by Professor Alan Welsh.

Research

Research interests include statistical inference, statistical modelling, robustness, nonparametric and semiparametric methods, analysis of sample surveys, and ecological monitoring. Applied work is currently focussed in ecology and chemistry. Honours and PhD supervision and projects are available in these research areas.

News

The ARC Discovery Project titled "The improvement of climate change investigations by developing and applying innovative evolutionary subset time series modelling using semi-parametric sparse-patterned approaches" (Prof TJ O'Neill, Prof R.D. Terrell, Prof AH Welsh, Dr J Penm, Dr J Penm, Prof CC Li and Prof A Chen) has been funded for 2010-2012.

Alan Welsh will become the Applications Editor of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Statistics from January 2010.

Honours and Graduate Courses

The program is involved in undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral education. The program provides at least one 3rd/4th year undergraduate course every year. The following courses have been presented recently:

  • Alan Welsh presented a special topic course on regression methods for mathematics students called Explanation and Prediction.
  • John Maindonald and Graham Williams presented the course MATH3346 on Data Mining.

Seminars

Statistical Science Seminars and Canberra Applied Statistics meetings are held at 2.30 pm on Thursdays. The MSI's weekly bulletin provides information on the Statistical Science and other MSI seminars. The Canberra Applied Statistics meetings are advertised through a mailing list (see below). Occasional seminars are also held by the School of Finance and Applied Statistics.
